The Dresser Style 90 "Universal" Coupling is engineered for polyethylene gas service pipe connections — joining PE to PE, PE to steel, and steel to steel in a single versatile design that meets ASTM D2513 requirements. Where standard Style 90 fittings are designed for steel-to-steel installations, the Universal coupling adds PE compatibility through the use of a plastic insert stiffener that supports the pipe wall inside the fitting, maintaining the SDR wall thickness under gasket compression.
The Universal coupling ships fully assembled with the same proven boltless compression design as the rest of the Style 90 family — threaded end nuts, self-centering gasket retainer cups, and resilient gaskets — but with the added grip ring and stiffener components required for polyethylene service. Standard working pressure is 150 PSI, and the design accommodates a range of PE pipe SDR specifications per D.O.T. 192.283(b).
| Nom. Pipe Size (IPS) | OD (in) | Max. Sealing Pressure | PE Pipe Type (5" Body) | PE Pipe Type (7" / 10" Body) | Max. Steel Pullout |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3/4 | 1.050 | 150 PSI | SDR 11 (Type 2306) | SDR 9.3 (Type 3406/3408) | 1,300 lbs. |
| 1 | 1.315 | 150 PSI | SDR 11 (Type 2306) | SDR 9.3 (Type 3406/3408) | 2,100 lbs. |
| 1-1/4 | 1.660 | 150 PSI | SDR 11 (Type 2306) | SDR 11 (Type 3406/3408) | 3,200 lbs. |
| 1-1/2 | 1.900 | 150 PSI | SDR 10 (Type 2306) | SDR 9.3 (Type 3406/3408) | 3,700 lbs. |

Polyethylene pipe pullout resistance is based on use of Dresser reinforcing pipe inserts. Pullout resistance unless noted is based on body strength. For reducing size couplings, the rating for the smallest diameter pipe applies.
