Split sleeves join or extend pipe runs without welding. Reinforcing sleeves restore structural wall integrity on thinned or corroded pipe without pipe replacement. Dresser Style 80, 126, 110, and 220 cover both functions across a broad size range.
| Parameter | Split Sleeve (80/126) | Reinforcing Sleeve (110/220) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Function | Mechanical joint / coupling | Structural wall restoration |
| Pipe Condition | Sound pipe, joining two pieces | Thinned / corroded pipe wall |
| Gasket | Yes — seals pipe end gap | Optional — seals only if leaking |
| Pressure Carrying | Coupling-rated | Restores pipe-rated capacity |
| Pipe Preparation | Clean OD at ends | Full OD cleaning over defect zone |
| Use Case | Joining, extending, bypassing | Repair corroded wall without cut-out |
Is the pipe wall structurally sound but you need a mechanical joint? → Split Sleeve. Is the pipe wall thinned or pitted by corrosion but the pipe is still in one piece? → Reinforcing Sleeve. Both questions can be true in the same repair trench — order both types if needed.
Inline inspection (ILI) programs on transmission mains identify wall-loss anomalies well before failure. Style 110 and 220 reinforcing sleeves are one of the primary mechanical repair methods specified in ILI-driven repair programs, alongside composite wraps. Dresser sleeves are metallic — appropriate where regulatory or engineering specifications require metallic repair methods.
A reinforcing sleeve is a repair tool for isolated anomalies. It does not address systemic corrosion or structural weakness over extended pipe sections. If anomaly density exceeds the defined repair threshold in your integrity management plan, segment replacement should be evaluated.
| Field Scenario | Pipe Condition | Correct Sleeve | Key Sizing Info |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inserting a new valve or fitting in-line | Sound pipe — joining two cut ends | Style 80 or 126 | Pipe OD + gap width |
| Extending a main from a dead end | Sound pipe — open end | Style 80 or 126 | Pipe OD + new pipe OD |
| Isolated corrosion pit found during dig | Wall-thinned but intact | Style 110 | Pipe OD + pit length |
| Extended wall-loss zone from ILI | Wall-thinned, multi-foot span | Style 220 | Pipe OD + anomaly length |
| Active leak at body of pipe | Through-wall perforation | Style 360 Repair Clamp | See Repair Clamps section |
