Split Sleeves and Reinforcing Sleeves
These are functionally different products that are often confused. Read the definitions carefully before specifying.
80Split Sleeve
Style 80 — Split Sleeve
Two-piece hinged sleeve that closes around an existing pipe to provide a coupling without removing pipe ends. Used for in-line pipe extensions, section insertions, and connections where full pipe access is limited.
126Split Sleeve
Style 126 — Split Sleeve
Heavy-wall split sleeve for larger diameter pipe or higher-pressure applications where the Style 80 wall thickness is not sufficient. Same two-piece hinged design with heavier bolt pattern.
110Reinforcing
Style 110 — Reinforcing Sleeve
Wraps around a section of thinned or pitted pipe wall to restore hoop-stress capacity without replacing the pipe. The sleeve acts as a structural overlay, carrying the internal pressure load that the weakened pipe wall can no longer handle.
220Reinforcing
Style 220 — Reinforcing Sleeve
Extended-length reinforcing sleeve for corrosion anomalies that span a greater axial length than the Style 110 body covers. Used when ILI or pipe digs reveal extended wall-loss zones on transmission mains.
Fundamental Distinction
Split Sleeve vs Reinforcing Sleeve — Not Interchangeable
These two sleeve types solve entirely different problems. Applying a split sleeve where a reinforcing sleeve is needed — or vice versa — is a specification error that may not be visible until the pipe fails.

The Key Question
Is the pipe wall structurally sound but you need a mechanical joint? → Split Sleeve. Is the pipe wall thinned or pitted by corrosion but the pipe is still in one piece? → Reinforcing Sleeve. Both questions can be true in the same repair trench — order both types if needed.
Style 80 & Style 126
Split Sleeve Selection — When to Step Up to Style 126
Style 80 covers the majority of distribution-main applications. Style 126 is specified when wall thickness, pressure rating, or pipe diameter exceeds Style 80 limits.

Distribution mains 2"–12" at normal operating pressures. Two-piece hinged design allows installation around existing pipe without requiring pipe end access.

Transmission mains, high-pressure systems, or larger diameters where additional wall thickness is needed. Heavier bolts and thicker sleeve wall than Style 80.

Sizing Guidance
Order split sleeves by pipe OD and sleeve body length. Body length must bridge the full gap between pipe ends plus allow adequate engagement on both sides.

Reinforcing Sleeve Engineering Basis
A reinforcing sleeve works by transferring hoop stress from the weakened pipe wall to the sleeve wall. This only functions correctly if the sleeve has full metallic contact with the pipe OD across the anomaly zone.
Installation Requirements for Effective Reinforcement

Full OD Contact
The reinforcing sleeve must contact the pipe OD continuously across the anomaly. Any void between sleeve and pipe creates a span where the weakened pipe wall still carries full pressure load.

Overhang Past Defect
Extend the sleeve at least 2" past each edge of the corrosion or wall-loss zone. ILI-based repair programs typically specify 3" minimum overhang on each side.

Epoxy Fill (if required)
In some specifications, the annular space between sleeve and corroded pipe is filled with epoxy grout before sleeve closure to eliminate voids. Check project specification before ordering.
ILI-Driven Repair Programs
Inline inspection (ILI) programs on transmission mains identify wall-loss anomalies well before failure. Style 110 and 220 reinforcing sleeves are one of the primary mechanical repair methods specified in ILI-driven repair programs, alongside composite wraps. Dresser sleeves are metallic — appropriate where regulatory or engineering specifications require metallic repair methods.
Not a Substitute for Pipe Replacement
A reinforcing sleeve is a repair tool for isolated anomalies. It does not address systemic corrosion or structural weakness over extended pipe sections. If anomaly density exceeds the defined repair threshold in your integrity management plan, segment replacement should be evaluated.
