Coupling Styles
Each style addresses a distinct joining scenario. Match your pipe OD, material, and operating conditions to the correct style before ordering.
38Most Specified
Style 38 — Regular Coupling
Standard-length bolted coupling for steel pipe. Available in 4", 5", 7", 12", and 16" lengths. Two or three bolt configurations depending on size. Fusion bonded epoxy OD coating standard.
40Extended Span
Style 40 — Long Coupling
Extended-length version of Style 38 for greater pipe end engagement. Ideal where pipe ends are out-of-round, corroded at the tip, or where additional pullout resistance is specified.
38Cast/Ductile
Style 38 — Cast & Ductile Iron OD
Style 38 couplings manufactured to fit the larger, bell-shaped OD of cast and ductile iron pipe. Available from 3" to 24" nominal. Do not substitute steel-OD couplings on CI/DI pipe.
40Cast/Ductile
Style 40 Long — Cast & Ductile Iron OD
Long-body coupling sized for cast and ductile iron OD dimensions. Used where additional engagement length is needed on CI/DI mains or where the pipe condition warrants extra bite.
138CI/DI Specialty
Style 138 — Cast/Ductile Iron Coupling
Purpose-built for cast and ductile iron pipe with the wide OD tolerance range characteristic of older CI mains. Epoxy ID/OD or RED-D Shopcoat finish. Sizes 3"–12".
39Insulating
Style 39 — Insulating & Reducing Coupling
Provides electrical isolation between dissimilar pipe materials or between cathodically protected and unprotected sections. Dielectric sleeve and gasket break the circuit at the joint.

Style 39 — Insulating Coupling
Same-diameter insulating coupling for joining like-size pipe where electrical continuity must be broken. Used at meter sets, vault entries, and any CP system boundary.
62Reducing
Style 62 — Reducing Coupling
Transitions directly from cast/ductile iron OD pipe to steel pipe OD without an intermediate fitting. Eliminates a flange pair at tie-in points. Available 3"–24" nominal.

Working Pressure by Size
Dresser Style 38/40 working pressure decreases with pipe diameter. Always verify with the published pressure-size table for the specific coupling series.

Torque Sequence
Always tighten bolts alternately and in stages — never fully torque one bolt before moving to the next. Final torque in minimum three passes.

Pipe Material Compatibility
Steel and iron pipe share nominal sizes but not OD dimensions. Ordering the wrong OD series is the most common specification error on coupling orders.

Critical Note
PVC C900 pipe is manufactured to cast iron OD dimensions — use CI-OD couplings, not IPS steel couplings, when tying into C900 mains.

Choosing the Right Body Length
Body length affects pullout resistance, angular deflection allowance, and gap bridging. Choose based on field conditions — not just cost.

Short Body (4"–5")
Use for routine pipe connections in good soil conditions with minimal angular deflection expected. Economical choice where pipe alignment is controlled.
Style 38 Standard

Medium Body (7"–12")
Preferred for older mains with variable OD tolerances, shallow installations with surface loading, or where thermal movement is anticipated.

Long Body (16"–24")
Specified for large-diameter transmission mains, high-pressure service, expansive soil areas, or where seismic deflection must be accommodated.
