⚠ Never Use an Effluent Pump for Raw Sewage

Effluent pumps are designed for water that has already passed through a septic tank or filter — large solids have settled out, leaving only fines. Try to pump raw sewage (toilet waste) with an effluent pump and the pump will clog within hours, the impeller will jam, and the motor will burn out from over-current. The Baker EF series is a ¾" solids pump — that's plenty for septic effluent and far too small for raw sewage. If your application has a toilet upstream of the pump WITHOUT a septic tank in between, you need a sewage pump (5050C SJ series).

Thermoplastic effluent pumps are the right choice for: clean greywater (showers, laundry, sinks), septic dose tanks with well-functioning upstream filter, and any installation where the chemistry of the effluent could attack cast iron over time. Lower upfront cost, easier handling, corrosion-proof. Baker's thermoplastic effluent line uses the same modern E-Series platform as the 8300 jet pump series.

When to Choose Thermoplastic Over Cast Iron

Thermoplastic wins when: (1) the application is greywater-only (no septic blackwater); (2) the well water has high mineral content that would corrode cast iron; (3) you need lower upfront cost for budget-driven specs; (4) the duty cycle is light (a few cycles per day, not continuous). Cast iron wins when: continuous-duty pumping, septic effluent (some chemistry), high cycle counts, or high-head applications. For most residential septic dose-tank applications: cast iron is the right call.

When to Specify High-Head (H) Effluent

Standard effluent pumps deliver design flow at moderate TDH. The "H" suffix variants are re-engineered for installations where the leach field, mound, or sand filter is significantly above the dose tank — situations that would starve a standard pump of flow at the working pressure.

When Standard Effluent Won't Cut It

Standard effluent pumps lose flow rapidly above ~25-30 ft of TDH. If your install has: (1) elevated drain field above the dose tank by 10+ feet AND a long discharge run to that field; (2) mound system with significant pressure-distribution losses; (3) sand filter beds requiring 4-5 PSI residual pressure for proper distribution; (4) long horizontal discharge with multiple bends — you need the H variant. Three numbers needed: design flow rate (GPM at the discharge), Total Dynamic Head (TDH), and dosing strategy (continuous vs time-dosed).

Common Questions

What's the difference between an effluent pump and a sewage pump?
Effluent pumps handle pre-treated water — water that has already passed through a septic tank or filter where solids have settled. ¾" solids handling, 1½"–2" discharge. Sewage pumps handle raw blackwater with toilet waste. 2" minimum solids handling, 2" minimum discharge required by code. Don't substitute one for the other — an effluent pump trying to handle raw sewage will clog within hours.
Do I need an effluent pump for my septic system?
Only if gravity won't deliver effluent from the septic tank to the drain field — typical when the drain field is uphill, far away, or buried at a depth that requires lifting effluent up to it. Many older septic systems use entirely gravity flow; modern systems with elevated mounds, advanced treatment units, or sand filters require effluent pumps to dose at the right flow and pressure. Ask your septic engineer or check the system as-built drawing.
When do I need the high-head (H) variant?
When TDH exceeds ~30 ft at your design flow. Common scenarios: (1) elevated drain field above dose tank by 10+ feet; (2) mound systems with pressure distribution; (3) sand filters requiring 4-5 PSI residual; (4) long discharge runs with multiple bends. My effluent pump is short-cycling. What's wrong?
Three causes: (1) Float differential too narrow — switch on/off range too small. Adjust tethered float for wider swing. (2) Pump oversized for inflow — empties tank too fast, fills again. Move to smaller HP. (3) Failed check valve — water bleeds back into dose tank between cycles. Replace check valve. For time-dosed systems, verify the controller's on-time and off-time programming match the system design.
What's a dose tank? Do I need one?
A dose tank is a separate pumping basin that holds septic effluent between doses. Required for: time-dosed systems, mound systems, and any application with pressure distribution. The dose tank receives effluent from the septic tank, the effluent pump (mounted in the dose tank) cycles to deliver measured doses to the drain field. Not required for simple gravity-fed septic systems where pumping is unnecessary.
Can I use my old sump pump as an effluent pump?
No — sump pumps are designed for clean groundwater with ⅛" solids handling. Septic effluent contains fines, fats, soap scum, and small organic particles that exceed sump pump tolerance. The sump pump's smaller passages will clog within weeks of effluent service. Use a proper effluent pump (Baker EF series) — designed for ¾" solids and rated for septic chemistry.
Tethered or vertical float on effluent pump?
Same logic as sump and sewage: tethered (CTEF) for wider basins (≥18" diameter), wider on/off range, fewer cycles. Vertical (CVEF) for tighter dose tanks where a tethered float would catch on basin wall. Most residential dose tanks are 18"×30" — tethered is the default. Utility (CUEF, no switch) for time-dosed systems where an external panel controls run cycles.
How often does an effluent pump need replacement?
Properly-sized cast iron effluent pump in residential service typically lasts 7–10 years. Premature failures (3-5 years) almost always trace to: (1) oversizing causing short-cycling; (2) raw sewage entering due to upstream filter failure; (3) failed float switch causing lockup; (4) grease or chemicals in greywater attacking impeller. Maintain upstream septic tank and filter properly to extend pump life.
Do I need an alarm on my effluent pump?
Yes for code compliance in most jurisdictions, and absolutely yes for system protection. Without an alarm, a failed pump leads to dose tank overflow → septic tank backup → drain field flooding → drain field failure (an expensive fix). High-water alarms cost $50-150 and protect a $5,000-15,000 drain field. Always include an alarm. NEMA 3R for outdoor dose tank lids, NEMA 1 for indoor mounting.
Can effluent pumps be used for greywater systems?
Yes — effluent pumps are well-matched for greywater (showers, sinks, laundry) since the chemistry is similar to septic effluent. Use thermoplastic models (more cost-effective for greywater service) or cast iron for higher-cycle applications. Check local codes — some jurisdictions have specific greywater system requirements for pump sizing, alarms, and labeling.
