Description

The Smith-Blair Style 663WR is a wide range all-stainless-steel tapping sleeve with a stainless steel flanged outlet, for size-on-size and reducing taps on new or existing pipe, 4-12 in runs with 4-12 in outlets. The heavy-gauge Type 304 body wraps the pipe a full 360°, supporting and reinforcing it, and is fully chemically passivated for corrosion resistance. Each part covers a wide OD band, up to 0.95 in, that takes both the IPS and the ductile iron OD of its nominal size, so one sleeve fits steel, PVC, ductile or cast iron of that size.

Choose the run size and measured pipe OD, then the outlet size; the part number follows.

Application: Tapping size-on-size and reducing branch connections where a full 360° seal is wanted to support and reinforce the pipe.

Key Features

  • Working pressure 240 PSI; test pressure 300 PSI
  • Gridded gasket with a molded-in neck ring for an effective seal; nylon washers improve bolt torque
  • Outlet flange recessed for tapping-valve alignment per MSS SP-60
  • 3/4 in NPT test outlet; accepts full-size cutters on all taps
  • Certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and 372; meets applicable portions of AWWA C223
What Ships and What It Needs to Run

Included: both sleeve halves with the gasket installed, the studs, keeper bars, nuts, stainless and nylon washers, and the 3/4 in test outlet with plug.

Needed to complete the tap, ordered separately: the tapping valve with its flange gasket and bolts (Smith-Blair recommends a 1/8 in ring-style elastomeric gasket), a tapping machine and shell cutter, and thrust blocking with permanent support under the valve.

12-Month Smith-Blair Warranty

Smith-Blair warrants its products to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of shipment by Smith-Blair. Dated proof of purchase, such as a bill of sale, is required to establish eligibility. Smith-Blair will repair or, at its option, replace a defective product; the product is returned to the factory or warehouse Smith-Blair designates.

Working Pressure

Up to 240 PSI. Test pressure 300 PSI. The working pressure of any tapping sleeve falls as pipe diameter rises; for a particular installation it also depends on the pipe type and condition, service conditions and workmanship, and never exceeds the rating of the pipe.

Pipe Applications

Carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, ductile iron, asbestos cement, PVC and HDPE pipe. PVC: DR 25 or thicker wall. HDPE: SDR 17 or heavier wall, underground service only, and a cutter 2 in smaller than the nominal outlet; keep the hole no larger than 2/3 of the pipe OD. Pipe must be round where the sleeve seats.

Installation Notes
  • Check the pipe OD and roundness where the sleeve will sit, then clean the pipe thoroughly, especially where the gasket seats.
  • Lubricate the pipe and gasket with a soap-and-water solution that meets the water and pipe supplier requirements. Mount the halves with the test outlet accessible; do not slide or rotate the sleeve on the pipe. Tuck the gasket flaps in so the gasket forms a uniform profile around the pipe.
  • Hand tighten, then tighten the nuts from the center outward, alternating sides and keeping equal gaps, until the halves conform to the pipe and reach the torque in the instructions. Use a calibrated torque wrench.
  • Block the tapping valve and machine and give the valve permanent support and thrust blocking. Smith-Blair recommends 1/8 in ring-style elastomeric valve flange gaskets.
  • Hydrostatic test only, never air: test the sleeve, outlet joint and valve to no more than 1.5 times line pressure before tapping.
  • Size-on-size taps on IPS pipe take a cutter at least 1/2 in smaller (12 in outlet on 12.75 in pipe: 11.5 in cutter). Re-torque after the tap and recheck the nuts 12-24 hours after installation.
