Description

The Smith-Blair Style 914 reducing flanged coupling adapter (FCA) joins plain-end pipe to a flanged valve, fitting or meter of a different size in one fabricated steel piece, such as 12 in steel pipe (12.63-12.84 in OD) to an 8 in flanged fitting. The coupling end fits pipe ODs from 3.44 to 32.09 in, and the flange end comes in 3 to 24 in sizes: ANSI 150 lb flat face through 5 in, AWWA C207 Class D (150 lb drilling) from 6 in.

Each 914 is built to order with a Flexi-Coat epoxy finish, alloy bolts and nuts and an NSF Nitrile (Buna-N) gasket. Choose the coupling-end OD range that contains your measured pipe OD, then the flange size; the part number is 914- plus the coupling OD code and the flange code, ending -003 for this standard build.

Application: connecting plain-end pipe to a flanged valve, meter or fitting of a different size, and replacing cracked pipe or spooled flanges.

Key Features

  • Working pressure up to 150 PSI; higher-pressure designs built to order
  • Reduces between pipe OD and flange size in one fitting, with no field fabrication
  • Flange ANSI 150 lb flat face 3-5 in, AWWA C207 Class D 6 in and up
  • Coupling end relieves stress, absorbs vibration and accepts up to 2° deflection
  • Certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372; meets applicable portions of AWWA C219
What Ships and What It Needs to Run

Included: the reducing adapter with follower, Nitrile gasket, and alloy follower bolts, nuts and washers, ready to install.

Anchor studs, built to order. The standard 914 has no anchor studs; Smith-Blair builds them in on request when the joint must hold the plain pipe end. Ask us to quote them.

Pipe stiffeners on thin-wall PVC and HDPE, ordered separately. Smith-Blair requires them on those pipes; ask us to quote them with the adapter.

12-Month Smith-Blair Warranty

Smith-Blair warrants its products to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of shipment by Smith-Blair. Dated proof of purchase, such as a bill of sale, is required to establish eligibility. Smith-Blair will repair or, at its option, replace a defective product; the product is returned to the factory or warehouse Smith-Blair designates.

Working Pressure

Up to 150 PSI, according to size and design; higher-pressure designs are built to order. In service the allowable pressure also depends on pipe type and condition, service conditions and installation workmanship.

Installation Notes
  • Clean about 12 in of the pipe end, keeping the gasket bearing surface free of blemishes, and lubricate the pipe and gaskets with a soap-and-water solution that meets the water and pipe supplier's requirements.
  • Slide the follower flange, gasket and adapter body onto the plain end in that order, bolt the body to the companion flange, then seat the gasket against the body and bring the follower up to it.
  • Keep the end gap between the pipe and the companion flange at least 1/2 in and no more than 3 in on 7-9 in bodies or 5 in on 10-15 in bodies; deflection is limited to 2° with 3 in of pipe engagement.
  • Torque the follower bolts in two passes to the values in the instructions with a calibrated torque wrench, and recheck after the line is pressurized.
  • Where anchor studs are built in: insert the pipe at least 1 in past the anchor-stud boss, drill through the pipe wall using a 1/2 in or 1 in NPT nipple in the boss as a guide, and set each stud with pipe thread compound, not tape; the pipe cannot be moved afterward.
  • Anchor the pipe: the FCA seals around it but does not restrain it, and Smith-Blair requires anchor studs or other proper anchoring to restrain pipe movement and prevent pull-out.
