Description

The Smith-Blair Style 921 Top Bolt flanged coupling adapter (FCA) is a wide range plain end x flange adapter in fabricated steel: one part seals a wide range of pipe ODs within a nominal size, up to 1.31 in, to connect plain-end pipe to flanged fittings, meters, valves and other flanged equipment, 2 to 12 in. The 3-12 in flanges carry AWWA C207 Class D (ANSI 150 lb) drilling; the 2 in is a standard meter coupling flange.

The coupling end tightens with a single top bolt and stabs on with no disassembly. A removable, bi-directional channeled inner gasket covers the lower part of the range and comes out for pipe in the upper range, and the two-piece coupling flange can be taken apart on site to replace a gasket. Choose the nominal size; each size covers the full OD range in the table below.

Application: connecting steel, ductile iron, PVC, copper, AC and HDPE plain-end pipe to flanged fittings, meters and valves, 2 to 12 in.

Key Features

  • Working pressure 175 PSI on every size
  • Wide range: one part covers up to 1.31 in of pipe OD within a size
  • Single top bolt on the coupling end; stab fit with no disassembly
  • Removable, bi-directional inner gasket and two-piece coupling flange for field gasket change; up to 4° deflection
  • Certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372; meets applicable AWWA C219 standards
What Ships and What It Needs to Run

Included: the assembled adapter, with sleeve, flange, two-piece coupling flange, stainless armor, inner and outer gaskets, and the 304 stainless top bolt with nut and washers, ready to stab onto the pipe.

Pipe stiffeners on HDPE and thin-wall PVC, ordered separately. Smith-Blair requires them on those pipes; ask us to quote them with the adapter.

12-Month Smith-Blair Warranty

Smith-Blair warrants its products to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of shipment by Smith-Blair. Dated proof of purchase, such as a bill of sale, is required to establish eligibility. Smith-Blair will repair or, at its option, replace a defective product; the product is returned to the factory or warehouse Smith-Blair designates.

Working Pressure

175 PSI on every size, 2 to 12 in. For a particular installation the allowable pressure also depends on pipe type and condition, service conditions and installation workmanship.

Materials Specifications
Sleeve Carbon steel per ASTM A283C, A285A or A36
Flange Carbon steel; AWWA C207 Class D, ANSI 150 lb drilling (3-12 in); standard meter coupling flange meeting ANSI B16.5 (2 in)
Coupling flange (ring) Carbon steel per ASTM A283C, A285A or A36; split two-piece design with integral bolt-head pocket for one-wrench installation
Armor Hardened Type 304 stainless steel, corrugated to cut friction against the gasket
Gasket Nitrile (Buna-N) per ASTM D2000, NSF/ANSI 61 and 372; bi-directional removable inner gasket; resists water, oil, acids, alkalies and most (aliphatic) hydrocarbons; -20°F to +180°F
Bolt Type 304 stainless steel, Flexi-Coat epoxy coated, 9/16-12 UNC swivel head with swivel washer
Nut Heavy hex Type 304 stainless steel, fluoropolymer finish to prevent galling
Connector bolts Type 304 stainless steel, 1/2-13 UNC countersunk Allen head
Washers Type 304 stainless steel over a Nylon 6/6 washer for better torque transfer
Finish Flexi-Coat fusion-bonded epoxy, 12-15 mils, applied to AWWA C213 methods

Pipe Applications

Carbon steel, stainless steel, ductile iron, asbestos cement, PVC, copper tube and HDPE pipe. HDPE and thin-wall PVC take pipe stiffeners, which Smith-Blair requires on those pipes.

Lower range with the inner gasket in place; upper range with it removed. Minimum pipe insertion 2.88 in (2 in), 3.38 in (3 in) and 3.50 in (4-12 in).

Installation Notes
  • Designed for stab fit, so no disassembly is needed: inspect the shipment and clean the pipe where the gasket seats.
  • Measure the pipe OD: for pipe in the upper range, remove the inner gasket; for the lower range, leave it in (table above). A removed inner gasket can be reinstalled.
  • Lubricate the pipe and gaskets with a soap-and-water solution that meets the water and pipe supplier's requirements, and insert the pipe at least the minimum insertion in the table note.
  • Keep pipe deflection within 4°, and fit pipe stiffeners first on HDPE and thin-wall PVC.
  • Tighten the single top bolt to the torque Smith-Blair specifies with a calibrated torque wrench, and recheck after the line is pressurized.
  • Anchor the pipe: the FCA seals around it but does not restrain it, and Smith-Blair requires proper anchoring to restrain pipe movement and prevent pull-out.
