Overview

Dresser Style 38 couplings give a flexible, leakproof joint on plain-end steel pipe that lasts the life of the pipe. No threading, beveling, exact fitting or alignment is needed: the resilient gaskets absorb vibration and pipe movement and let curves be laid with straight lengths. These are the builds listed in Dresser’s Gas price list, with armored or armored pinned Grade 27 gaskets.

Application: Joining and repairing plain-end steel natural gas mains.

  • Seal-only bolted sleeve: middle ring, two followers, two gaskets
  • Absorbs vibration, expansion, contraction and deflection
  • Gas price-list builds with armored or armored pinned gaskets
What Ships and What It Needs to Run

Included: middle ring, two followers, two gaskets of the build selected, bolts and nuts.

Anchoring, by others: the coupling seals but does not restrain the pipe.

Working Pressure

Rated by size and middle ring in Dresser’s gas catalog, from 150 PSI to 900 PSI. Ratings follow Barlow’s formula at half the minimum yield of the middle ring; the allowable pressure on a job also depends on the pipe and the service.

Build Codes

Build codes are printed as in Dresser’s Gas price list. AP27 and APIN are armored pinned Grade 27 gaskets, ARM27 is an armored Grade 27 gasket, P42 is a Grade 42 gasket and ALCLAD is Dresser’s fusion-bonded epoxy coating. For any other code (A/C, RR), ask us and we confirm the build with Dresser.

Installation Notes
  • Mark the pipe and stab it into the coupling to the full stab depth.
  • Anchor the pipe joint wherever pull-out can occur; the coupling seals but does not restrain.
  • Clean dirt, rust, oil and loose scale from the pipe ends and check the gasket seat for gouges.
  • Lubricate the gaskets, pipe OD and middle ring flares with soapy water or a non-petroleum lubricant.
  • Tighten the nuts on opposite sides evenly to the recommended torque, and check every nut before backfilling.
  • Read the Dresser installation instructions and warnings before installing.
