AWWA Class D · No Welding
Connect plain end steel or cast/ductile iron pipe to flanged valves, pumps, and equipment. AWWA Class D rated. No welding, threading, or pipe modification required. Fusion bonded epoxy coated.
Standard Duty · Pipe Rehab
Reinforces weakened or corroded pipe sections without replacement or excavation. Two Style 38 couplings, no special tooling, no welding. The standard solution for restoring distribution main integrity.
Heavy Duty · Higher Pressure
Heavy-duty sleeve for higher-pressure rehabilitation. Heavier wall than Style 110 for transmission mains and more severe applications. Compatible with Style 38, 40, and 138 end couplings.
Permanent Termination · No Welding
Permanently caps steel and cast iron pipe ends using the same elastomeric gasket sealing system as the Style 38. Allows future reconnection. Standard dead-end termination for distribution mains.
Cast & Ductile Iron · FBE Coated
Designed specifically for cast and ductile iron pipe. Fusion bonded epoxy or RED-D shopcoat options. Multiple ring lengths per size for varying installation conditions.
C.I. to Steel Transition
Connects cast iron pipe to steel pipe of different OD — the standard solution for tying new steel mains into existing cast iron infrastructure. Fusion bonded epoxy coated.
Small Pipe · Economical
Cast iron body coupling with 5 in sleeve. Economical option for smaller-diameter steel pipe. Available with armored gaskets for rough or pitted pipe surfaces.
Galvanized · Small Diameter
Galvanized compression fitting for steel pipe 1/2 in to 2 in. Regular and long body. Insulating adapter gaskets available for dielectric isolation between dissimilar metals.
Full Circle · Multi-Width
Full-circle repair clamp for emergency leak repair on steel, cast iron, and ductile iron pipe. Multiple widths from 7.5 in to 30 in for varying defect lengths. Alloy or stainless steel bolts.
Tapping Vent · Line Repair
Tapping sleeve for line repair with integrated vent access. Multiple vent sizes for different service requirements. Useful for live-line repair where pressure relief is needed during installation.
Bell Joint · Steel Pipe
Collar-type leak clamp for steel pipe 6 in nominal and larger. Designed for sealing leaks at bell-spigot joints without taking the line out of service.
Conductive Bonded · Steel Pipe
Service saddle for steel pipe with conductive bonded design. Used for service line connections to distribution mains. Multiple outlet sizes and tap configurations available.
The most widely specified bolted coupling for steel pipe in water, gas, and industrial distribution — available with Grade 27, 42, and 365 gaskets from 1/2 in through 36 in.
The Dresser Style 38 is a two-bolt, split-sleeve bolted coupling that has been the standard for steel pipe connections for over a century. Its design compensates for minor pipe misalignment, end irregularities, and thermal expansion — without welding or threading. It allows approximately 1–3° of angular deflection and limited axial movement.
The Style 38 works on virtually any steel pipe OD without modification. One part number covers multiple wall thicknesses. Grade 27, 42, or 365 gaskets fit the same body — making it the single coupling that covers water, gas, oil, and industrial applications.
Style 38 (regular body) is the standard choice — compact, low cost, excellent for field repairs and new construction. Style 40 (long body, 12 in ring) is specified when you need greater pull-out resistance or higher moment load capacity. Both use identical follower rings and gaskets.
0038-0002-011 = Style 38 · Size 0002 (1/2 in pipe, OD 0.840 in) · Suffix -011 (Grade 27, alloy bolts). Suffix -013 = Armored Gr 27 · -134 = Armored Gr 42 · -345 = Grade 365 High Temp.

Correct installation is critical to achieving a leak-free, long-service-life connection. Follow these steps for all Dresser bolted couplings.
Verify pipe OD using calibrated OD tape or calipers at two points 90° apart. OD must match the coupling's rated range — not nominal size. A "4-inch" pipe may be IPS (4.500 in), cast iron (4.800 in), or other.
Wire brush the pipe surface minimum 4 in from each end (6 in for Style 40). Remove all rust, scale, mill coating, tar wrapping, and burrs. Gasket seating surface must be clean bare metal or intact epoxy.
Apply a light coat of neutral soap solution to the inside of each end gasket and the pipe in the seating area. Prevents gasket tearing during assembly and ensures proper seating.
Slide follower rings onto each pipe end — beveled face toward pipe end. Slide end gaskets with split facing top. Center middle ring over the gap. Bring follower rings to middle ring and install bolts hand-tight.
Tighten bolts alternately and uniformly — never tighten one fully before the other. Torque in equal increments to final spec. Gap between follower rings and middle ring should be equal on both sides.
Slowly bring to operating pressure. Inspect all bolts for uniform gap. If weeping occurs, depressurize and re-torque that end only. Never re-torque under full pressure. Gap must be equal on both sides.
| Nominal Size | Pipe OD (in) | Bolt Dia. | Min Torque (ft-lb) | Recommended (ft-lb) | Max Torque (ft-lb) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2 – 3/4 in | 0.840 – 1.050 | 1/2 in | 10 | 15 – 20 | 25 | Hand-tight + 1/2 turn acceptable |
| 1 – 1-1/2 in | 1.315 – 1.900 | 9/16 in | 15 | 20 – 30 | 40 | Alternate bolt tightening required |
| 2 – 3 in | 2.375 – 3.500 | 5/8 in | 25 | 40 – 60 | 75 | Check gap equality each increment |
| 4 – 6 in | 4.500 – 6.625 | 3/4 in | 50 | 75 – 100 | 125 | Torque wrench mandatory |
| 8 – 12 in | 8.625 – 12.750 | 3/4 – 7/8 in | 75 | 100 – 150 | 175 | Two-person recommended |

Extend service life of weakened or corroded steel pipe without excavation or replacement. Install over existing pipe using standard Dresser couplings — no welding required.
Purpose: Reinforces externally corroded or mechanically weakened pipe, restoring structural integrity without replacement. Standard choice for distribution mains with localized external corrosion or physical damage.
Purpose: Heavy-duty rehabilitation for more severe applications, higher working pressures, and larger damage areas. Heavier wall than Style 110 for transmission mains where Style 110 thickness is insufficient.
Provide: (1) Nominal pipe size. (2) Measured OD. (3) Required sleeve length (defect span + 6 in overlap each side). (4) Operating pressure. (5) Pipe material (steel vs. cast iron). Contact sales@watermainsupply.com for sizing assistance.
