Overview

The Dresser STAB-38 is a packaged pipe joint: a Style 38 bolted coupling that leaves the factory fully assembled, with no loose parts. Take it out of the carton, slide it on one pipe end, stab the other pipe into it and tighten the bolts. Dresser rates it for permanent, tight joints on steel pipe from 2 in to 12 in, with armored or armored pinned Grade 27 gaskets and a 5 in or 7 in middle ring.

What STAB Means

STAB is Dresser's name for its pre-assembled couplings: the crew stabs the pipe end into a coupling that is already put together. The coupling itself, middle ring, followers, gaskets and bolts, is the same design as the standard Style 38. The difference is how it arrives and how fast it goes in.

Installation in Brief
  • Clean both pipe ends to bare metal so the gaskets seat on steel
  • Chalk a centering mark 6 in from each pipe end
  • Lubricate gaskets and pipe ends with soapy water; add anti-freeze in freezing weather
  • Slide the coupling onto one end, stab the other pipe in until the ends meet, then back it out 1/2 in to 1 in for deflection and expansion
  • Center the coupling between the chalk marks and tighten the nuts a turn or two at a time around the pipe, to at least 80 ft-lb
  • Maximum deflection after tightening: 6 degrees on 2 in, 4 degrees on 3 in to 12 in
