What Ships and What It Needs to Run

Included: the pump with its internal regulating valve, the square flange capacitor-start motor, and a pressure switch factory set to 20/40 PSI on the 1/2 HP or 30/50 PSI on the 3/4 and 1 HP models. The housing plug is tapped for a 1/4 in pressure gauge.

Jet ejector required, ordered separately. A.Y. McDonald lists the ejector as a separate order. Shallow well: High Capacity (651, 652, 653-JP) or High Pressure (655, 656, 657-JP) packages. Deep well: 4 in two-pipe or 2 in single-pipe packages, by HP and depth to water; the Performance tables name the ejector for each duty.

Pressure tank, foot valve and well piping: sized to your well and ordered separately. A reliable foot valve is a must on a deep well jet.

Overview

The 8600 is A.Y. McDonald’s cast iron convertible jet pump with a high service factor square flange motor. With the ejector bolted to the pump body it works as a shallow well pump on water up to 25 ft below; with the ejector down the well, below the water level, it lifts from 30 to 120 ft. The internal regulating valve is set by hand for deep well use. Two pipe tappings, 1 in and 1 1/4 in, take the drive and suction lines.

Certified for drinking water to NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372, for private wells and home water systems.

  • One pump, two well types — convert from shallow to deep well by moving the ejector, not the pump.
  • Easily serviced — working parts come out with the motor adapter, so the piping stays put; drain plug in the housing.
  • Thermoplastic seal and condensation plate keeps an air gap between the motor and the water chamber.

12-Month A.Y. McDonald Warranty

Covered for 1 year from the date of installation, or 2 years from the date of manufacture, whichever comes first, under A.Y. McDonald’s published limited warranty terms, as set out in the A.Y. McDonald Pumps & Accessories Price List. Components made by other manufacturers, such as the motor and the pressure switch, carry their original manufacturer’s warranty.

Single Unit

Each 8600 runs as one pump on its own pressure switch and tank. Size it to the household’s peak demand at your depth to water. For more pressure from deep wells, the 1500 Multi-Stage reaches 160 ft with its own ejectors.

Where two voltages are shown, the first is the factory wiring setting. Voltage is changed with the voltage change device on the motor, never at the pressure switch, and must match your supply before power is applied. All models listed are single phase unless the table states 3Ph.

Performance — Will It Do What You Need?

Each figure is gallons per minute from A.Y. McDonald’s published tables. Find your depth to water, then read across to the pressure you need. The ejector named on the row is the one that delivers it.

High capacity or high pressure ejector: on the 1 HP from 15 ft, the 653-JP gives 18.4 GPM at 40 PSI and shuts off at 64 PSI; the 657-JP gives 10.0 GPM at 40 PSI but still delivers 2.4 GPM at 70 PSI, with an 80 PSI shut-off. A 40/60 PSI switch needs the High Pressure ejector.

Deep well: the 1 HP 8610 with the 7903-JP in a 4 in well delivers 5.5 GPM at 20 PSI from 80 ft and 2.8 GPM from 120 ft.

Max shut-off is the pressure at zero flow — a ceiling, not a working point. A blank cell is a combination the pump does not reach. Deep well figures are at 20 PSI on a 20/40 PSI switch setting. Source: Pumps by Baker catalog, rev 3/26, p. 222.

Before You Buy — The Limits That Decide the Fit
Ejector Required and ordered separately. Choose by well type, casing size, HP and depth to water from the Performance tables.
Pressure switch Factory set 20/40 PSI on the 1/2 HP and 30/50 PSI on the 3/4 and 1 HP. The cut-out has to sit below the shut-off pressure: with the High Capacity ejectors that is 58 to 64 PSI, with the High Pressure ejectors 74 to 80 PSI, so a 40/60 PSI system takes a High Pressure ejector.
Depth to water Shallow well to 25 ft. Deep well 30 to 120 ft, by HP, casing and ejector.
Priming Start it with the pump and piping completely full of water. A reliable foot valve is a must on a deep well jet; an air leak in the suction line makes it lose prime.
Power Dual voltage, single phase: factory wired 115V on the 1/2 HP and 230V on the 3/4 and 1 HP. Max amps 12.0, 7.6 and 9.2 at the factory setting.
Drinking water Certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372.
Pressure tank Sized separately: the Tank Calculator works it from pump GPM and the switch setting.
Pairing Single unit.
