What Ships and What It Needs to Run
Included: the Pumptec unit in its enclosure (Baker part 6617-425, Franklin Electric 5800020610).
Fits: Franklin 2-wire and 3-wire single-phase submersible motors, 1/3 to 1 1/2 HP. Not for permanent split capacitor (PSC) motors.
Still required: the motor’s control box (3-wire motors) and motor overload protection to NEC Article 430. Pumptec replaces neither.
Overview
Pumptec is a microcomputer-based pump protection device. It continuously monitors motor load and power line conditions to protect against dry well conditions, waterlogged tanks and abnormal line voltage. It interrupts power to the motor whenever the motor load drops below a preset level or drops quickly, and its indicator lights show the complete system status without removing the cover.
It is optimized for Franklin 2-wire and 3-wire single-phase motors from 1/3 to 1 1/2 HP. An adjustable underload (dry well) setting handles unusual installations, and alarm circuit contacts can drive a remote alarm.
-
Dry well (underload) protection — stops the motor when the well runs dry, then restarts it after the reset time you choose.
-
Over and under voltage — shuts down on bad line voltage and restarts automatically when it returns to normal.
-
Rapid cycle protection — catches a waterlogged tank or failed check valve before the motor starts itself to death.
-
Bound pump (overload) — trips on excessive motor current.
-
Heavy-duty relay and alarm contacts — 1 A at 115V or 230V for a remote alarm.

Installation
- Turn off power at the AC source and remove the Pumptec cover.
- For a 1 1/2 HP motor, move the circuit board jumper to the 1.5 hp position. The factory position covers 1/3 to 1 HP.
- Mount the unit where it is convenient to wire.
- Choose a wiring option: Pumptec may be wired ahead of or after the pressure switch, on 2-wire and 3-wire motors. Wire it ahead of the switch if you want rapid cycle protection and status lights at all times.
- Connect L1, L2 and ground from the supply, and the motor leads to the 2-wire motor or the 3-wire control box. Power connects the same way at 115V or 230V.
- Set the reset time-out knob; the factory setting is 30 minutes.
- Leave the underload setting at the factory 70% unless the installation is unusual.
- Wire the alarm circuit if wanted (1 A maximum), replace the cover and restore power.
The wiring diagrams, install options and dial settings are in the photo gallery above.
What the Lights Mean
| Light |
Meaning |
| Power solid |
Powered and idle: waiting for the pressure switch to start the motor |
| Power flashing |
Pumping water and running normally |
| Load solid, no flicker |
Dry well: motor load below the underload setting. Restarts after the reset time |
| Load solid, slight flicker |
Underload from a rapid drop in load (about 25% in 20 seconds). Restarts after the reset time |
| Load flashing |
Overload: motor current too high. Reset by removing power for 10 seconds |
| Voltage solid |
Under voltage (below 207V). Restarts when voltage returns to normal |
| Voltage flashing |
Over voltage (above 253V). Restarts when voltage returns to normal |
| Load and Voltage flashing together |
Rapid cycling (4 starts per minute). Restarts after the reset time |
Troubleshooting
| Symptom |
What to check |
| No lights |
No power at L1 and L2, or Pumptec is wired after the pressure switch and the switch is open |
| Solid load light |
Check that pump and motor are matched; look for a blocked intake, stuck check valve, stripped coupling or blocked plumbing. If the unit is too sensitive, lower the underload setting, then confirm it still trips on a dry well |
| Flashing load light |
Motor stalled or a ground fault |
| Solid or flashing voltage light |
Line voltage too low or too high: check for loose connections or an unloaded generator, and report persistent problems to the power company |
| Load and voltage lights flashing |
Rapid cycling: check for a waterlogged pressure tank or a bobbing float switch |
Before You OrderCheck the motor nameplate: 1/3 to 1 1/2 HP, single phase, 115V or 230V. Pumptec is not for PSC motors, and A.Y. McDonald notes it is not compatible with two-wire A.Y. McDonald motors. It does not replace a motor control box or motor overload protection.
