Goulds Pressure Switch

The pressure switch is what starts and stops a conventional fixed-speed pump: it closes at the cut-in pressure and opens at cut-out, and the gap between those two figures is the pressure swing the building feels. Getting the range right matters as much as getting the pump right — a switch set wide enough to stop short-cycling is also wide enough to be noticed at the shower.

Six models cover the usual residential and light commercial ranges, including higher-horsepower versions of the common 30-50 psi setting where contact rating rather than pressure range is the deciding factor.

Match the switch to the pump, not to the pressure you want. The cut-out figure has to be inside what the pump can actually make at the flow the building draws, or the pump never reaches cut-out and runs continuously against the system.

Check the horsepower before the pressure. Two of these models carry the same 30-50 psi range at a higher horsepower rating. The pressure range is identical; the contact rating is not, and fitting the standard switch to a larger motor is how contacts weld.

Set the tank pre-charge to 2 psi below cut-in, with the system drained. A tank charged at or above cut-in short-cycles the pump in a way that looks exactly like a failing switch.
