Overview

The VR SpecPAK is a pre-engineered booster system that uses an integrated PLC controller, a user-friendly HMI screen, and a variable frequency drive to intelligently increase water pressure while maintaining a constant, reliable output.

It is an integrated pump package featuring multiple Franklin Electric VR Series vertical multistage pumps connected in parallel on a welded frame. The system’s intelligence resides in a central control panel equipped with a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Human Machine Interface (HMI). The PLC automatically rotates the lead pump to ensure even wear and maximize the system’s service life, and the system is designed to maintain constant pressure even if one of the pumps has failed.

VR Series pumps feature an all 316 stainless steel rotating assembly for durability, efficiency and performance. They suit water supply and pressure boosting systems including HVAC, water treatment, irrigation and agriculture. From the HMI the operator updates the overall system control settings as well as many of the parameters on the individual VFDs, so the pumps are controlled as a package instead of individually.

The package arrives pre-assembled with a main disconnect and individual circuit isolation, allowing a single pump to be serviced without shutting down the entire system.

This listing is the Quadplex (4-pump) system. The same pump models are also built as Duplex or Triplex. Every configuration ships factory-assembled on one frame with a single panel staging the pumps, and each added pump adds flow and gives you a spare if one goes down. The pump count is chosen at purchase.

More pumps hold more pressure at the flow the building actually draws. Each pump carries a share of the water, so each sits higher on its own curve. The shut-off pressure at zero flow is the one figure fixed by the pump model.

Performance β€” Will It Do What You Need?

The figures below are the pressure this system adds. That is what a pump curve measures β€” the impeller does not know what pressure is already on its inlet. Max flow and max boost are the two ends of each curve, never a duty point: max boost happens at zero flow, and max flow happens at the lowest pressure in the row. Size to the column at your peak flow.

Zero flow is the shut-off point β€” a ceiling, not a working point. Figures are Franklin Electric’s tabulated 60 Hz hydraulic performance for each VR pump with full-diameter impellers (VR Series 60 Hz product catalog 00105042, 06/2020; guaranteed to ISO 9906:2012 grade 3B), converted from metres of head to psi, with flow multiplied by the pump count for all pumps running. The drives hold any lower pressure by running slower. Convert psi to head by dividing by 0.433. The exact model is confirmed in Franklin FE Select with every quote.

Drawing from a tank or cistern β€” nothing arrives with pressure, so what the pumps add is what you get. The 45VR 3-Stage system at 952 GPM delivers 121 psi.

Fed by a city main β€” the pumps add on top of what already arrives, and the controller holds the discharge setpoint you enter at the touchscreen. On a main delivering 40 psi, that same system can reach 161 psi at 952 GPM; set it lower and the incoming pressure buys you more flow at that setpoint.

Ask for more flow than the system can deliver at your setting and the pumps run at full speed continuously, which is where motors and seals wear out. Sizing a booster to the building rather than to the headline numbers is what makes it last.

How It Holds Pressure
Function How it works
Constant pressure control A pressure control loop holds the discharge setpoint entered at the touchscreen. In Auto mode the panel starts, stops and speeds the pumps on its own to maintain it.
Lead and lag staging A lag pump starts when the lead pump is above the Lag Start Speed and system pressure stays under 95% of setpoint for the Stage On Delay. The last lag pump stops when the lead pump is below the Lag Stop Speed and pressure holds at 98% of setpoint or better for the Stage Off Delay.
Alternation Switches the lead and lag pump designation to spread run hours across every pump. Interval alternation is on elapsed time.
Sleep mode When the setpoint is met with no demand, all pumps stop. The Wake Pressure restarts them; the default wake offset is 5 PSI, so a 70 PSI setpoint wakes below 65 PSI. Widening that deadband gives longer sleep periods between run calls.
System response tuning Slow, Medium, Fast or Custom PID response, with P-Gain, I-Time and Ramp Time open to adjustment in Custom.
Auto and Manual modes Auto runs the pumps to the setpoint. Manual lets an operator start and stop each pump and set its speed between the minimum and maximum manual speeds.
Drive settings from one screen Motor HP, voltage, RPM, FLA and frequency, acceleration and deceleration time and rotation are set at the HMI, and pump 1 settings can be applied to all pumps in one press.
Protection, Logs & Security
Protection or record What it does
Low suction pressure Warning or fault at a set pressure after a set delay. A fault stops the system before the pumps run short of water.
Overpressure The system stops when discharge pressure passes the overpressure level, then restarts automatically.
Low discharge pressure Optional fault when discharge pressure falls below its setpoint, for a burst line or lost supply.
Backup discharge transducer If the primary discharge transducer signal is lost, the backup carries on and the panel logs a warning.
Sensor loss Each sensor can be set to log a warning and keep running, or to fault and stop.

Data log Pressure and power readings over time, with two data sets compared on one graph.
Pump details Output voltage, current and power, DC bus voltage and IGBT temperature for every drive.
Password levels Settings are locked behind user accounts so only authorized operators can change them.

Installation β€” What the Installer Provides and Connects

Site water connections Grooved. Suction and discharge can each be piped to either end of its manifold; the supplied end cap and coupling close the other end.
Isolation valves at the package Supplied by the installer, near both the inlet and the outlet. They ease startup loads and hold the discharge line full during maintenance.

Before You Buy β€” The Limits That Decide the Fit
Discharge setpoint Entered at the touchscreen. The pressure each model can hold at your flow is in the Performance tables above; the max boost figure is the zero-flow ceiling, so size to the table column at your peak flow.
Maximum system pressure Incoming pressure plus pressure added must stay inside the pump casing rating. Franklin lists the round-flange VR pump at 360 psi maximum allowable working pressure.
Suction Built for a flooded or pressurized suction. The suction transducer reads inlet pressure and the low suction protection stops the system when supply falls away.
Power 460V 3 phase on every model listed here. Other voltages are separate builds, so confirm the service before ordering.
Indoor installation NEMA 1 panel, 104Β°F maximum ambient. Plan for a conditioned mechanical room.
Relief valve A full-flow pressure relief valve on the discharge is required and is supplied by the installer.

Indoor Installation β€” Installer-Supplied Relief Valve RequiredThe control panel is NEMA 1 rated and is installed indoors in a controlled environment. Pumps can develop very high pressure, so Franklin requires a pressure relief valve able to pass the full pump flow, installed near the discharge and routed to a drain capable of full system flow. Keep the panel fan filters clean and in place, and keep the HMI out of direct sunlight.
