Description

The Smith-Blair Style 397 is a ductile iron service saddle built for PVC pipe. One wide Type 304 stainless steel strap (3 in on 2 in pipe, 3.5 in on 4-12 in) seals uniformly and supports the pipe nearly 360° around the tapped area without a crushing action. The body is cast to the PVC pipe's steel (IPS) or cast/ductile iron (C900) OD and carries a TaperSeal Nitrile gasket bonded in its cavity.

At recommended torque the saddle exceeds the working pressure of most standard pipe, and a closed lug on one side acts as a hinge with the strap for easier installation. Use it for service taps, air/vacuum and drain valves and other service equipment.

Application: service taps of 3/4 to 2 in on 2-12 in PVC pipe with steel or ductile iron OD.

What Ships and What It Needs to Run

Included: the epoxy-coated ductile iron body with the TaperSeal gasket in place, the one-piece wide 304 stainless strap with welded studs, fluoropolymer-coated stainless nuts and stainless washers.

Spring washers on HDPE, ordered separately: Smith-Blair spring washers p/n 150115-002 are required where TI-035 allows HDPE (4-12 in, DR17 or thicker); ask us to quote them with the saddle.

12-Month Smith-Blair Warranty

Smith-Blair warrants its products to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of shipment by Smith-Blair. Dated proof of purchase, such as a bill of sale, is required to establish eligibility. Smith-Blair will repair or, at its option, replace a defective product; the product is returned to the factory or warehouse Smith-Blair designates.

Up to 200 PSI. depending on size and application. Smith-Blair notes the allowable pressure depends on the type of pipe, pipe diameter, service conditions and installation workmanship.

Choose the size and pipe OD in the first option and the tap in the second; the part number shows in the last option.

Installation Notes
  • Confirm the saddle type, tap size and pipe OD match the job, then clean the pipe where the gasket will seat; check the gasket position (its adhesive only eases installation and may not hold all around).
  • Lubricate the pipe and gasket with a soap-and-water solution (anti-freeze may be required) that meets the water and pipe supplier's requirements, and mount the body as close to the final tap position as possible without moving or rolling it on the pipe.
  • Tighten the nuts progressively and evenly to the torque in the instructions, keeping the stud lengths on both sides equal. Over-torquing does not improve the seal and can damage the pipe or saddle. The saddle is not designed to give structural rigidity to connections or equipment.
  • Make the connection with a pipe-thread compound that both lubricates and seals (no tape products), and pressure-test for leaks before making the tap.
  • Plastic pipe limits: steel-OD PVC 4.50-12.75 in of DR26 or less; cast/ductile iron OD C900 PVC 4.80-13.20 in, Class 150 (DR18) or better. Not for fiberglass-reinforced pipe, plastic irrigation pipe or other plastic pipe.
  • On HDPE (4-12 in, DR17 or thicker), fit Smith-Blair spring washers p/n 150115-002; other spring washers may cause failure.
