Overview

Inline Controls are pump starting and control devices that pair with a submersible or surface pump up to 20 amps — roughly 3 HP — to provide or boost system pressure, and in many cases do it without a bladder tank at all. The control starts the pump on flow rather than on a pressure switch closing, which removes the cycling a switch produces and the tank you would otherwise fit to slow it down.

Three models. SWC is the base smart flow control. ADJ adds a gauge and an adjustable low-pressure backup cut-in at 22, 29 or 36 psi. CTL adds a built-in pressure reducing valve so the pump’s maximum output pressure can be dialled down to match the system.

Two features run through the range that most controls do not have: a daily motor rotation start that energizes the motor at least once every 24 hours to prevent the system locking up, and an automatic restart that clears an unexpected trip without someone driving out to press a button — up to ten times in a 24-hour period if no water is detected.

Which Model
Model Part No. Motor size Voltage Max current Min flow Thread What it adds
InlineSWC 91987103 · FIL-SWC16 up to 2 HP (1.5 kW) 115/230V 16 A 0.25 gpm 1 in MNPT Flow activation, dry run, low-pressure backup, suction lift
InlineADJ 230V 91987106 · FIL-ADJ16-2G up to 2 HP (1.5 kW) 230V only 16 A 0.25 gpm 1 in MNPT Adds a pressure gauge and adjustable backup cut-in at 22, 29 or 36 psi
InlineCTL 91987107 · FIL-CTL20 up to 3 HP (2.2 kW) 115/230V 20 A 0.25 gpm 1-1/4 in MNPT Adds a built-in pressure reducing valve for maximum output pressure regulation

All three: maximum temperature 131°F / 55°C, maximum operating pressure 174 psi (12 bar), built-in check valve, and they all replace the external pressure tank and differential pressure switch. The SWC and CTL wire for 115V or 230V with no internal settings or wiring changes; the ADJ is 230V only.

How It Works

Flow activation at 0.25 gpm — With flow of 0.25 gpm or greater the pump runs continuously through the demand cycle. Below that, the control falls back on pressure.

Low-pressure backup — On the SWC the pump starts at a minimum pressure of 22 psi; on the ADJ that backup point is selectable at 22, 29 or 36 psi so the system still reaches the shut-off pressure you want.

Rebuild-only restart — If the pump starts on low system pressure with no actual demand, the control runs the system only long enough to rebuild pressure rather than completing a full cycle.

Dead-head protection — Protects the pump against dry run, over-current and pumping against a closed discharge by powering off the system when water flow stops.

24-hour autorun — If the pump sits idle for 24 consecutive hours the device runs it to keep the system free of debris and clogs, and to stop the motor locking.

Automatic re-rest — The system auto-rests up to ten times in a 24-hour period if no water is detected, rather than latching out and waiting for a site visit.

Built-in check valve — Included in all three models.

Before You Buy — The Limits That Decide the Fit
Pump sizing is the critical check Franklin is explicit: proper pump selection is essential, because the pump’s shut-off pressure must be reached within the system before it shuts down. If the pump cannot be reduced to a lower output within the system’s pressure limits, select the CTL with its built-in pressure reducing valve.
Motor size SWC and ADJ to 2 HP / 1.5 kW at 16 A. CTL to 3 HP / 2.2 kW at 20 A.
Voltage SWC and CTL wire for 115V or 230V with no internal changes. The ADJ is 230V only.
Maximum operating pressure 174 psi (12 bar).
Maximum temperature 131°F / 55°C.
Friction loss The control itself costs pressure — roughly 3 psi at 20 gpm on a 1 in x 1 in installation, rising steeply above 40 gpm. On a large pipe or a high flow rate, Franklin publishes an optional bypass arrangement; a 1 in x 1-1/2 in bypass cuts the loss to about 8 psi at 80 gpm.
Mounting The SWC and ADJ are always mounted vertically in a bypass arrangement.
Pressure tank Not required — the control replaces the tank and the differential pressure switch. On any system with a storage water heater a separate thermal expansion tank is still required at the heater.
