Overview

CRNE 3 is the Grundfos CRN pump with the drive built into the motor. The Grundfos MLE motor carries its own variable frequency drive and PI controller, so the pump sets its own speed to hold a setpoint as demand changes. There is no separate drive to buy, mount, wire or commission, and no motor-protective circuit breaker to add: the drive protects the motor and electronics against overload, and the supply needs only normal short-circuit protection for the cable.

Every part in contact with the liquid is AISI 316 stainless steel. Grundfos builds the CRNE for industrial liquids and for systems where all wetted parts must be high-grade stainless: reverse osmosis, ultra-filtration, demineralising and distillation, acids and alkalis, glycols, oils and process water. For clean cold or hot water, the cast-iron and 304 stainless Grundfos CRE 3 is the matching pump.

This listing is the 3600 rpm build with 1 1/4 in ANSI flange, 300 lb class connections. Grundfos publishes the 3600 rpm and 4000 rpm builds as separate part numbers, so they are listed separately rather than mixed. It covers 11 models from CRNE 3-2 to CRNE 3-25, 1/2 to 5 HP, on 200-240V 1Ph; 200-240V 3Ph; 440-480V 3Ph supplies, each with or without a factory pressure sensor.

Suction and discharge sit on the same level, so the pump drops into a straight pipe run. It is set up at the factory: connect power, set the pressure you want, and it runs.

What Ships and What It Needs to Run

Included: the CRNE 3 pump end and its Grundfos MLE motor with built-in frequency converter, with coupling, coupling guard and cartridge shaft seal, factory-assembled and tested as one complete pump. With-sensor part numbers include the pressure sensor.

ANSI companion flanges required, ordered separately. The mating flanges are not part of the pump.

Without-sensor builds: for constant-pressure control, add a pressure sensor or an external control signal.

Suction and discharge piping, valves, power supply and disconnect: sized to your system and ordered separately.

Warranty

24 months from the date of installation, but not more than 30 months from the date of manufacture. Grundfos warrants its products to the original user to be free of defects in material and workmanship for that period, and repairs or replaces at its option.

In Grundfos’s words: “Grundfos will not be liable for any costs of removal, installation, transportation, or any other charges that may arise in connection with a warranty claim.” Keep the proof of purchase and the installation date; both are needed for a claim.

Grundfos Pumps Corporation limited warranty, as printed in the Grundfos North America E-pump installation and operating instructions.

One Pump, or Several?

The CRNE runs as a complete single pump. For duty/standby or staged multi-pump boosting, Grundfos builds these pumps into Hydro MPC and Hydro Multi-E systems, specified as a set with the control. Ask us if that is what the job needs.

For a building management system, a Grundfos CIM communication module connects the pump so setpoint, control mode and status can be read and changed remotely.

Voltage and phase are fixed per part number on an MLE motor; there is no terminal-board changeover as on a fixed-speed CRN. Check the supply before ordering: single-phase and three-phase units are not interchangeable.

With Sensor or Without — Which Do You Need?

With sensor. The pump ships with a factory pressure sensor fitted to the outlet and set to constant pressure. Set the pressure you want and the pump varies its speed to hold it, whatever the flow. It can also be switched to constant-curve operation. This is the version to order unless you already know otherwise.

Without sensor. The same pump, drive and panel, with no sensor supplied. It leaves the factory in open-loop constant-curve operation, ready for an external speed or setpoint signal from a controller or building management system. Fit a sensor later and it can hold pressure, differential pressure, temperature, differential temperature, flow or tank level.

With a sensor fitted, the setpoint range equals the sensor’s measuring range, which is fixed per part number and marked on the sensor. Tell us the pressure you need to hold and we will confirm the sensor range of the part number before you order.

Key Features
  • Variable frequency drive built into the motor — continuous speed control to hold a setpoint, with built-in motor protection.
  • Totally enclosed, fan-cooled Grundfos MLE motor, Ultra Premium Efficiency class, insulation class F.
  • HMI 300 operating panel as standard, for setpoint and operating mode at the pump.
  • Grundfos GO app — the smaller MLE motors talk to it by radio or infrared through the MI 301 module; the larger three-phase motors have built-in Bluetooth.
  • In-line ports — suction and discharge on the same level.
  • Cartridge shaft seal with silicon-carbide seal faces.
  • 1 1/4 in ANSI flange, 300 lb class connections.

Performance — Will It Do What You Need?

A pump curve plots what the pump adds. Every head figure is pressure added to whatever already arrives at the inlet, at full speed. It is not the discharge pressure and not the controller setpoint.

CRNE 3 pump size Grundfos figure
Rated flow 18 US gpm
Flow range 1.8 to 26 US gpm
Maximum head, tallest model in the range 839 ft
Maximum pump efficiency 56 %
Motor power across the range 0.5 to 5 hp

Grundfos CRE, CRIE, CRNE North America data booklet 98556115 (08.2026), product range table. These are figures for the whole CRNE 3 pump size across every model and speed, not the duty point of a single model on this listing. Head in feet × 0.433 = psi added.

The duty point of each model. Every part number above has its own curve. Send us the flow and pressure you need and we will read the exact model off the Grundfos curve and send it back before you order.

Drawing from a tank, cistern or well. Nothing arrives with pressure, so what the pump adds is what you get.

Fed by a city main. The pump adds on top of what already arrives, and the controller holds the total. Incoming pressure buys you more flow at the same setpoint.

The Model option shows Grundfos's rated duty point for the exact build selected (Grundfos Product Center, 60 Hz). Head and flow at the rated point vary slightly with the motor fitted, so it can differ a little from the figures above for the same model.

Before You Buy — The Limits That Decide the Fit

The curve is one check of several, and rarely the one that fails.

Limit Why it decides the fit
Maximum operating pressure 362 psi. This is inlet pressure plus what the pump adds against a closed valve. A strong main feeding a tall stack can reach it.
Maximum inlet pressure Set by model and motor size; see the table below. The first check on any pump fed by a city main or another pump.
Suction Prime the pump before start. On a suction lift, fit a non-return valve on the suction line; NPSH decides how much lift the pump can take, so ask us to check it on the curve.
Power 200-240V 1Ph; 200-240V 3Ph; 440-480V 3Ph. Voltage and phase are fixed per part number.
Installation Indoor. Keep cooling air below the motor’s maximum ambient: 122 °F, or 104 °F on 200-240V 3Ph motors.
Liquid temperature -4 to 248 °F.
Sensor A without-sensor unit runs on a set curve until a sensor or an external signal is connected.
Low-flow stop The stop function needs a pressure sensor, a non-return valve and a diaphragm tank downstream of the pump, precharged to 0.7 × setpoint.
Models Motor [hp] Maximum inlet pressure
CRNE 3-2 to 3-12 1/2 to 2 145 psi
CRNE 3-12 to 3-21 3 to 5 218 psi

Grundfos CRE, CRIE, CRNE North America data booklet 98556115 (08.2026), sections 8.4.1 and 8.4.3. Grundfos lists the maximum inlet pressure for models up to CRNE 3-21. For CRNE 3-25, ask us and we will confirm the figure with Grundfos.

Before You OrderConfirm the duty with us against the model’s Grundfos curve, remembering that head is what the pump adds. Check voltage and phase against your service. Confirm inlet pressure plus added pressure stays inside 362 psi, and inlet pressure inside the model’s limit. For the low-flow stop function, plan a diaphragm tank of about 2 gal (Grundfos typical size for this pump) precharged to 0.7 × setpoint.
