Overview

The Dresser Style 38 coupling joins plain-end steel pipe with no threading, beveling or exact alignment. This build carries Viton fluorocarbon gaskets for line contents that attack standard rubber.

Application: Steel lines carrying hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, organic acids, nitrogen-containing compounds, vegetable oils and greases (Dresser gasket overview).

  • Viton Grade 224 gaskets rated to 350°F
  • Same middle ring, followers and bolting as the standard Style 38
  • Absorbs vibration, expansion and deflection at the joint
  • Sizes 1 in through 24 in nominal
What Ships and What It Needs to Run

Included: one middle ring, two followers, two Viton gaskets, bolts and nuts.

Pipe prepared before install: plain pipe ends, clean and round where the gaskets seat.

Anchoring, by others: the coupling seals but does not restrain.

Genuine Dresser equipment, factory-new in original packaging — sold and supported by Watermain Supply, an independent industrial supplier.
12-Month Dresser Warranty

Covered for 12 months from the date of purchase under Dresser’s published warranty terms.

Working Pressure

100 PSI maximum. Dresser rates the Viton gasket at 100 PSI and 350°F, and the gasket sets the limit for this build: the higher figures printed for the standard Style 38 apply to Buna-S gaskets, not to Viton. The allowable pressure on a job also depends on the pipe, its condition and the workmanship.

Materials Specifications
Followers AISI C1012 or ASME SA36 (ductile or malleable iron for 1/2 through 1-1/2 in)
Middle ring ASTM A513, ASTM A635 or ASME SA675 GR60
Bolts and nuts AWWA C111 / ANSI A21.11
Gasket Grade 224 fluorocarbon (Viton), brown/tan mold code
Coating Fusion-bonded epoxy

Installation Notes
  • Clean dirt, rust, oil and loose scale from each pipe end, and check the gasket seats for gouges or grooves (Dresser installation guide, tag 0001-0737-999).
  • Mark each pipe end at half the middle ring length plus 2 in, and center the coupling between the marks.
  • Lubricate gaskets, pipe OD and middle ring flares with soapy water or a non-petroleum lubricant.
  • Each pipe end must sit at least 1 in past the end of its gasket after deflection.
  • Tighten nuts on opposite sides to draw the followers up evenly to the torque in the guide, and check every nut before backfilling.
  • Anchor the pipe: the coupling provides a pressure seal only, and Dresser requires the joint to be anchored wherever pipe pullout could occur.

From the Dresser installation and torque guide for Styles 38, 40, 56, 62, 69, 71, 72, 76, 89, 128 and 168 (in the Data Sheet tab). Torque values stay in the guide.

Before You Order. Measure the pipe OD with a pi tape and match it to the OD in the picker; cast and ductile iron run larger than steel of the same nominal size. Dresser builds couplings for odd ODs, other middle ring lengths, stainless steel and other gasket grades on request: email sales@watermainsupply.com with the OD and the line content. Viton is a registered trademark of DuPont. Part numbers ending in V are Watermain Supply build numbers for the Viton-gasket coupling; 0038-9037-186 is Dresser’s own number. Non-stock Dresser parts are not returnable without Dresser’s authorization, and ship time is confirmed when you order. Custom builds (other sizes, widths, gaskets or materials) are available: email sales@watermainsupply.com with the pipe OD, material and line content.
